Sleeve Gastrectomy is the most common weight loss surgery performed, accounting for nearly 60% of all weight loss surgeries. Using a small incision technique, about 75% of the stomach is removed to create a narrower stomach “tube” or “sleeve”. This procedure limits the amount of food that you can eat, but also decreases the hunger hormones that are made by the stomach, and changes the hormones that affect metabolism. On average, weight loss is slightly less than with the Gastric Bypass but significantly better than the band. Complication rates and death are also significantly lower with the Sleeve than with the Gastric Bypass. Most people can expect to lose between 50-70% of their excess weight.
